It's been rather an age since I've posted some 'news', well I have some now...
Its snowing, again and I've been busy for the last few months working on a series of educational picture books called 'Pete's Peculiar Pet Shop' for Pearson Education. This is Pete pictured clutching one of the characters from the book, a stinking, burping baby dragon. There are three books in the series currently, with possibly a fourth to come. I'll add some more images of the artwork when I can.
I'm currently working on my first picture for Pan MacMillan, written by the excellent Peter Bently. Which is very exciting but I can't say more until the summer.
Bog News... Monsters Illustration Collective were commissioned by Research Studios to 'liven' up the boring magnolia walls with a spot of illustration. Armed with our pens, ink, paint and vinyl cut outs we squeezed the six of us into a rather small toilet for the day HERE
Here are some snaps of my two new books for Pan MacMillan for a brand new series called 'Quentin Quirks Magic Work's'. These are the first two of the series entitled 'Attack of The Bum Biting Sharks' and 'The Purple Sluggy Worry Warts'.
The series aimed at 7 - 10 year old boys is written by Matt Kain and is about two friends, Jez and Charlie who meet potion maker Quentin Quirk and discover his amazing magic works. I illustrated the covers and interior with all manner of weird creatures including Mutant Custard Tarts, Coffee loving Bats, Bum Biting Sharks and Worry Sucking Warts, you can buy them from amazon HERE
I also provided cover artwork for Nature magazine recently, which I've uploaded on the illustration page so check it out.
Having just got back from cycling 175 miles along the Reivers Route from Whitehaven to Durham, I felt it was apt to post this illustration from my monthly spot in Triathlete Magazine by Rachel Snook. Aside from riding I've been busy completing the illustrations for the second 'Quentin Quirk's Magic Work's' book for MacMillan, 'The Purple Sluggy Worry Warts' to be published later this year.
Also, very chuffed to say Benji and I have been nominated for a D&AD award for our Ladyhawke 'My Delirium' music promo. From 20,000 entrants we're amongst the 165 nominees for 2009, pencils to be announced in June, here's the other nominees... www.dandad.org/awards/awards
I'll be posting some current work up on my site very soon, when I get my lazy asse in gear.
After a jolly nice Christmas break I'm back at my desk a belt size bigger. I've completed a little print advert for the architecture Build Design Magazine promoting their Book Club, whereby readers can review books for the website. I came up with a book worm character but a skyscraper rather than a worm, I also made a short web banner animation for the BD online home page you can see here from January 23rd... www.bdonline.co.uk
I'm working on a few other projects at the moment. One is a graphic comic I started last year called 'Ink Tales'. I was experimenting with ink dripping onto paper with water and letting the ink seep into the paper to create really interesting textures and working them into backgrounds. Its a simple tale of a man searching high and low for his dog, he meets God, Satan and Gary on the way. I'm also just starting work on the second Quentin Quirk book called 'The Purple Sluggy Worry Warts'.
Meanwhile in Frater camp, we have a few interesting projects we're working on which will be showing their face in a few months.
Somebody has drawn the winter nights closer.
I've been very busy for the last month or so on a few different projects. Firstly, I'm thrilled to be illustrating a children's fiction book for MacMillan publishers. The first of the series entitled 'Quentin Quirks Magic Works' is called 'Attack of The Bum Biting Sharks', featuring mutant Custard Tarts, Coffee loving Bats and Bum Biting Sharks and this here is the cover. It will be out sometime late next year.
I've also been busy in Frater HQ at Partizan co-directing our first live action/animation mix music promo for New Zealand 80's popster Ladyhawke. It was a month of blood, sweat and teas but it was all worth while in the end. Have a look at it through the Frater website here... www.fraterfilms.com
Step aside Mr Bale, lay down your vests Mr Willis, hang up your whip Mr Ford for here is my stunning Biro Oscar winning performance in the current Nokia Navigation advert. If you've not seen it and are desperate to do so (I don't blame you) its on Youtube, its my hand that begins the adverts and then I follow in the next few seconds pretending to draw, convincingly I think...
Also there are quite a lot of printed ads dotted around London. 'Like homing pigeons to Trafalgar Square' was my contribution at Oxford Circus tube with many pigeons crapping their way to Trafalgar Square, you can see that on my Illustration page.
FAT CHUNK is a collaborative comic book featuring a collection of different artists, each contributing work based on a theme. With work from artists from all over the world, from well-known comic titans to fresh new webcomic talent, from influential street artists to custom toy designers, and thrown them together to make one hefty and exciting comic.
My contribution was The Tale of Robot Johnson, a struggling Jukebox from Mississippi that can only play crap songs like the lyrical genius of Des'ree's 'Life'. Following the advice of Blind Lemon Jefferson he takes a trip to the cross roads to meet the Devil in return for his soul.
Fat Chunk is out now featuring lots of cracking artwork! It's available to buy at Amazon.
Crowds gathered round in their masses as my website went online.
A big thank you to George Sheldrake and Matt Sephton who designed and programmed it respectively.
I ll keep you up to date with my Illustration and Animation adventures right here!
